Why Resting Powerhouse exists

Resting Powerhouse creates carefully designed spaces where people can step back from everyday demands, reconnect with what matters and consider how they want to move forward

It brings together rest, embodied practice, reflective inquiry, collaborative conversation and practical action - elements that are often separated, but which can become much more powerful when experienced together

The gap I kept encountering

We are often asked to divide ourselves in two

In professional and leadership settings, we are frequently encouraged to analyse, decide, plan and perform. In restorative spaces, we may be invited to slow down, breathe and return to ourselves. Both can be valuable, but they are rarely brought into meaningful conversation.

I kept encountering this division in my own life. The spaces that supported rest did not always help me work with the deeper questions about leadership, purpose and change. The spaces designed to address those questions often left little room for the body, uncertainty, care or genuine pause.

Resting Powerhouse grew from the belief that we should not have to choose between restoration and serious thought. We need spaces in which both can happen.

The moment the idea became clear

The idea took shape through experience

During periods of retreat and reflection, I began to notice how much becomes possible when the usual noise recedes. Yet I also found myself wishing for careful guidance: a way to explore what was surfacing, connect it to the realities of work and life, and think alongside other people without being rushed towards an answer.

I began imagining an experience that combined the spaciousness of retreat with the depth of reflective leadership work — without turning rest into another productivity technique.

That became the starting point for Resting Powerhouse.

About Dr Gemma Lord

I am a researcher, educator and facilitator with a background spanning organisational behaviour, leadership, care, sustainability and collective change. I am a Lecturer in Organisational Behaviour at a University Business School in the UK and previously worked for nine years across public and voluntary-sector roles involving service development, consultation, engagement and facilitation.

My research examines how people organise, make decisions and sustain meaningful work under pressure. Across that work, I have repeatedly seen that the conditions surrounding thought and action matter: people need time, trust, dialogue and room to reconnect with purpose, not simply more instructions or demands.

Resting Powerhouse brings that experience together with my longstanding engagement in movement, wellbeing and reflective practice. It is not conventional management training, and it is not simply a wellness retreat. It is an attempt to create a more integrated and human space for people navigating responsibility, transition and possibility.

How we work

Resting Powerhouse experiences are designed around five commitments:

Rest without justification

Rest is not something that must be earned through exhaustion or converted immediately into greater output.

Reflection with depth

We create enough time and structure to move beneath quick answers and familiar scripts.

The whole person

Thinking, feeling, embodied experience, work and life are not treated as separate domains.

Collaborative intelligence

Insight can emerge through being heard, hearing others and exploring questions together.

Purposeful movement forward

The aim is not forced certainty, but clearer possibilities and more intentional next steps.
